Third Edition of Ottawa Comiccon Complete

Ottawa, ON – Ottawa Comiccon took take place at the EY Centre this weekend attracting over 38,000 visitors, an increase of 8,000 over the 2013 edition, from all corners of the fantasy fiction world converging for the highly anticipated third edition of the event. Fans came to meet their real-life heroes and to partake in the pleasure of shopping for collectible treasures, comic books, toys, cards, movies, and other fantastical and geeky memorabilia collectors found themselves in paradise.

The 2014 edition also brought over 100 activities including celebrity Q&As, panels, workshops, comedy, games shows, “lightspeed” dating, autograph sessions, photo ops, a Filk concert and the masquerade.

Celebrities guests included Christopher Lloyd, best known as the beloved Emmett “Doc” Brown in the Back to the Future trilogy. Robert Englund, best known to the audience as Freddy Krueger in eight films from the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise. As well as, Bruce Campbell (Evil Dead, Burn Notice), Amanda Tapping and Christopher Judge (Stargate SG-1), Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad), Kane Hodder (Friday the 13th: Part VII thru X), Karl Urban (Star Trek), Sean Astin (The Lord of the Rings), Ray Park (Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace), Edward James Olmos (Battlestar Galactica), Pat Mastroianni (Degrassi) and Summer Glau (Firefly).

Ottawa Comiccon Is Coming This Weekend!

Ottawa, ON – Outside Brothers Beer Bistro at the corner of Dalhousie St. and George St., a crowd of comic fans started to gather as the opening event took place, giving the public a preview of what to expect this weekend.

Another member of Team Fox, Oliver Holler said, “It’s a great way for us to spread the word about the Michael J. Fox Foundation.”

Visitors will be given the opportunity to make a donation and sit in the DeLorean Time Machine, created 14 years ago by Terry and Oliver Holler. All the proceeds received by the Back to the Future team will go towards Team Fox for the Michael J. Fox Foundation.

“We really get to see a more exclusive event then we have in the past,” said Andy Pegan, dressed as Chewbacca.

“Last year at Comiccon, we raised almost $11,000 for Make A Wish Foundation, just with our photo booth and with our blast range. This year we’re introducing a new activity,” said Pegan,

Ottawa, ON – North American Soccer League action returned to the campus of Carleton University at Keith Harris Stadium as the Ottawa Fury FC (0-2) welcomed the Carolina RailHawks (2-0) in front of a crowd of 2,158 on a rainy Saturday in the nation’s capital.

Winterlude and It’s Ice Sculptures Return to Ottawa

Ottawa, ON – The 36th edition of Winterlude runs from January 31 to February 17, 2014. Winterlude is an annual festival in Ottawa, Ontario and Gatineau, Quebec that celebrates winter. Winterlude is run by the National Capital Commission and was started in 1979. The event is one of Ottawa’s most important tourist draws, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. The Winterlude festivities are focused in three main locations:

  • The Crystal Garden, in Confederation Park, is home to amazing ice sculptures.

  • The Rideau Canal Skateway, which winds its way through downtown Ottawa, is the world’s largest skating rink.

On Tuesday, January 28, 2014, the 27th Crystal Garden International Ice-Carving Competition began with professional ice-carvers from around the world setting to work in the Crystal Garden (Confederation Park) transforming blocks of ice into works of art. 2014 Canadian Tire National Skating Championships Underway in Ottawa

Ottawa, ON – The 100th anniversary of the Canadian National Skating Championships landed in Ottawa, marking the 14th time in the history of the event it’s been held in Ottawa, since it’s humble beginnings in 1914 when it was held across the city at the Minto Skating Club.

The opening ceremonies were officiated by members of all levels of government, Gordon O’Connor (MP), Yasir Naqvi (MPP) Jim Watson (Mayor of Ottawa).

Women’s (Short):
Kaetlyn Osmond, 18, whose season has been hampered by injuries won the short program by about nine points. Her mark of 70.30 is marginally ahead of last year’s short program mark, when she won the Canadian title. Former Canadian champion Amélie Lacoste, finished second with her first clean short program in years, she said, and sits at 61.27 points. Gabrielle Daleman, only 15, is third at 58.38.

War of 1812 Rages Again at Bicentennial of the Battle of Crysler’s Farm

Ingleside, ON – On 13-14 July, over 500 reenactors representing naval, artillery and infantry units from across Canada and the US converged on the Crysler’s Farm Battlefield Memorial grounds near Upper Canada Village to commemorate the Bicentennial of the Battle of Crysler’s Farm — when Lt.Col Joseph W. Morrison’s 1200-man “Corps of Observation” defeated an American army three times its size.

The event provided families, children and history enthusiasts with a unique opportunity to experience the attitudes and spirit of the times by attending 3 battle reenactments, a regency ball, and historically accurate portrayals of crafts, sports, military, merchants and civilian life of the War of 1812-1815 period.
