CAN-AM: Champions Go 1-1 In Inaugural Season Exhibition Action

Ottawa, ON – After the Ottawa Lynx left after 14 seasons in 2007, Ottawa has seen two failed attempts at bringing baseball back to Ottawa, Ottawa Rapidz (2008) Ottawa Fat Cats (2010-2012). But professional baseball is set to return to Ottawa, the Ottawa Champions of the Can-Am League, were announced in June of 2014 and set to play their home opener on 22 May.

The Ottawa Champions played their first exhibition season, just 2 games, this past weekend both verse the Trois-Rivières Aigles who finished last in Can-Am League action last season.

The exhibition season opener saw the Champions drop to the Aigles, 2-1, with the Champions highlight coming in the 4th inning as Willie Carmona hit a solo shot home run. The score would remain 1-0 Champions until the 7th inning when Ottawa reliever Drew Cisco ran in trouble, loading the bases with no one out but managed to escape with only 1 run scored. But in the 8th inning, Cisco would be tagged for the loss, after a hard double down the right field line by Aigles’ centre fielder Steve Brown, which plated the eventual winning run in Jose Cuevas.

The Champions were hoping for better results in front of a home crowd for the final game of exhibition action. Trois-Rivières would score first in the top of the 1st inning but Ottawa recovered in its half of the inning scoring 3 runs for a 3-1 lead after 1 inning of play. The Champions would hold the lead the entire game, including 3 runs scored in the final inning on their way to 9-4 win. Ottawa saw another strong game from Willie Carmona who led the offence, going three-for-four on the day while scoring two runs. The Champions also got strong performances from 1B Jon Talley (2-for-4, 3 RBI), LF Mike Schwartz (3-for-5, 2 R), and Roberto Ramirez (3-for-4, 2 R, RBI). Ottawa starter Jack Wagoner recorded two strikeouts in two innings pitched, and only allowed one earned run while walking two. Joe Riley, Dan Meyer, Josh Blanco, Nick Purdy, and Alan DeRatt also took the mound for the Champions.

Ottawa, ON – On a partly overcast but warm Saturday afternoon, approximately 500 fans gathered at Keith Harris Stadium on the Campus of Carleton University to watch the Ottawa Outlaws make a bit of franchise history verse the Montreal Royal.

Ottawa and Montreal stayed close with back and forth goals in the first half of the game. Ottawa, seem to take charge for most of the 3rd quarter, managing to maintain a 3-4 point lead over the Royal. Then in the last minutes of the 3rd the Royal showed some signs of life and fought back in the game to make it a 1 point game. This was followed by a delay of game call against Montreal which pushed the Royal team 10 yards back, causing Montreal to drop the disc close to their zone and Ottawa’s Jeremy Hill stuck with another goal. Montreal would not give up, they chipped away at Ottawa’s lead in the 4th quarter and made strong defensive moves. Near the end, the Royal got the lead down to one goal. OHL: 14th Annual Ottawa 67’s Teddy Bear Toss

Ottawa, ON – The Holidays are just around the corner but not for every little boy and girl. Hundreds of kids in the Ottawa region have very little to celebrate, which is why the Ottawa 67’s partnered with the Salvation Army for the annual “Teddy Bear Toss” game. Sir John Carling Building Life Ends With A Bang

Ottawa, ON – The Sir John Carling building, former headquarters of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, came crashing down Sunday morning in a controlled explosion.

Ottawa, ON – The Ottawa Fury FC welcomed FC Edmonton for their last game at Keith Harris Stadium in front of a sellout crowd of 3,207 fans.

W-League: Gilliland’s Goal Leads Fury FC Women To 2-0 Victory

Ottawa, ON – The Ottawa Fury FC (1-0) played their last game at Carleton University’s Keith Harris Stadium as they hosted the K-W United FC (1-0).

The Ottawa Fury FC’s Arin Gilliland opened the scoring in the 23rd minute when she put a shot far corner past K-W United FC keeper Alison Gondosch. CFL: RedBlacks Open Rookie Camp

Ottawa, ON – Despite threats of a CFL player strike as the CFL and CFLPA try to find common ground on a collective bargaining agreement, the Ottawa RedBlacks rookie training camp began on Wednesday afternoon at Carleton University’s Keith Harris Stadium. The rookies get an early start as they try to make an impression in advance of the main camp starting Sunday.

It’s the second training camp for a local former standout at the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees receiver Simon Le Marquand, who was selected in the fourth round of the 2013 CFL draft by Hamilton. After being cut by the Ticats a year ago, he thought his CFL dream may be over, until he was signed by the RedBlacks back in December.

Also in camp are quarterbacks Jesse Mills of the Carleton University Ravens and Derek Wendell of the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees as non-roster invitees.

Both players will work out with the RedBlacks until the team travels to Regina for the first exhibition game against the Saskatchewan Roughriders on June 13.

“It’s important for our organization to give back to the community and we wanted to extend this invitation as a gesture of goodwill to our city’s university football partners at Carleton and the University of Ottawa,” said RedBalcks’ GM Marcel Desjardins. “It’s our hope that these players acquire valuable experience and take that experience to the playing field during the 2014 CIS season.”
