2014 Canadian Tire National Skating Championships Underway in Ottawa

Ottawa, ON – The 100th anniversary of the Canadian National Skating Championships landed in Ottawa, marking the 14th time in the history of the event it’s been held in Ottawa, since it’s humble beginnings in 1914 when it was held across the city at the Minto Skating Club.

The opening ceremonies were officiated by members of all levels of government, Gordon O’Connor (MP), Yasir Naqvi (MPP) Jim Watson (Mayor of Ottawa).

Women’s (Short):
Kaetlyn Osmond, 18, whose season has been hampered by injuries won the short program by about nine points. Her mark of 70.30 is marginally ahead of last year’s short program mark, when she won the Canadian title. Former Canadian champion Amélie Lacoste, finished second with her first clean short program in years, she said, and sits at 61.27 points. Gabrielle Daleman, only 15, is third at 58.38.

Ice Dance (Short):
Marks of 10 filled the scorecard of Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir when they won the short dance with a score of 76.16. Kaitlyn Weaver and Andrew Poje, are in second place with 72.68 points, with their technical score 36.09 only marginally behind that of Virtue and Moir’s mark of 37.66. Alexandra Paul and Mitchell Islam, took third place with 67.67 points.

Patrick Chan’s quad toe loop–triple toe loop helped launch him to the victory during the men’s short program as he won with 89.12 points. that’s about 10 points ahead of Liam Firus, who is in second with, 78.93. Kevin Reynolds, is in third place with 78.29 points, only .64 behind Firus.

Pairs (Short):
Meagan Duhamel hopped up and down like a little girl and Eric Radford clutched his heart after their first place short program with 75.80 points. Kirsten Moore-Towers and Dylan Moscovitch earned a standing ovation for their flawless routine and finished second with 74.96 points. In third place are Paige Lawrence and Rudi Swiegers, who both doubled their triple toe loops, good enough for 61.67 points.
