Ottawa, ON – Women soccer players of all ages were invited to join VIPs and members of the media at the launch of the Official Emblem for the FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015. The main event was held at BC Place in Vancouver with corresponding events taking place in each of the Official Host Cities which included Ottawa.
Mayor Jim Watson hosted the Ottawa event at City Hall in Council Chambers, he joined Bob Chiarelli, Minister of Infrastructure and by Canadian Soccer Association and members of local women’s soccer teams. Mayor Watson highlighted some of the local team’s achievements, including the Ottawa Fury, Women’s League Champions and the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees, Ontario University Athletics Champions.
Ottawa is one of six Canadian cities and the only Ontario city. FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015 will not only expand the tournament from 16 to 24 teams from around the world but also mark the first time that a single-sport event has been hosted from coast to coast in Canada. The six official host cities are Edmonton, Moncton, Montréal, Ottawa, Vancouver, and Winnipeg.
