TORW: Ethiopian Fastest on Canadian Soil at Scotiabank Ottawa Marathon

Ottawa, ON – The 2014 Tamarack Ottawa Race Weekend welcomed 48,000 participants in six races, including the Scotiabank Ottawa Marathon, the Scotiabank Half-Marathon, the Ottawa 10K, the HTG Sports 5K, the 2K and Kids Marathon. The Scotiabank Ottawa Marathon and Ottawa 10K are both designated Silver Label IAAF events by the International Amateur Athletic Federation (IAAF). Run Ottawa, the organization behind the Tamarack Ottawa Race Weekend, is dedicated to promoting the sport of running and enhancing the health and well-being of our community by organizing distinctive world-class and local races, and managing an active, membership-based running club.

The Lowertown Brewery Ottawa 10K was topped by Kenyans, Mary Keitany (0:31:21) of Kenya was the top finisher and top female, and Wilson Kiprop (0:28:00) was the top male, followed 4 fellow Kenyans, for the top 5 male finishers, women’s side saw 4 of the top 6 spots go to Kenyans. Ottawa, ON – May 25, 1975, the first Ottawa Marathon was held with 146 participants, at that time organizers thought it would be a onetime deal. May 25, 2013, 39 years later, the Tamarack Ottawa Race Weekend is the biggest multi-distance race event and the largest marathon in Canada, with 7 races, approximately 43,300 runners including 6,203 spots in the marathon. In addition, the Ottawa Marathon is only one of two IAAF (International Association of Athletics Federations) sanctioned events in Canada, and the Ottawa 10K is the only Canadian 10K race sanctioned by the IAAF.

The 10K race was won by El Hassan EL ABBASSI from Morocco (0:27:36.6), the top female also from Morocco was Malika ASSAHAH (0:31:45.7). The top Canadians Male: Kelly WIEBE of Vancouver (0:29:22.0) Female: Lanni MARCHANT of London (0:32:45.80). An honourable mention has to go out to 13 year old Shona MCCULLOCH of Ottawa (0:39:39.3) who competed with elite runners twice her age.
