Sentries Return to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

Ottawa, ON – The sentry at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier resumed today at 1330hrs following its suspension after the tragic events on the morning of 22 October. Prime Minister Harper and Chief of Defense Staff Lawson were on-hand today for the return of the sentries.

The honour of being the first sentries to return to the Tomb of the Unknown soldier was bestowed upon to members of 2 Battalion, Royal Canadian Regiment, Cpl. Daniel Germaine and Cpl. Mark Daigle. Cpl. Germaine, spoke of the privilege to be on duty at the Tomb of the Unknown soldier, especially with the memories of the past few days fresh in everyone’s mind. Cpl. FORTISSIMO IN THE NATION’S CAPITAL

OTTAWA, ONTARIO–The 16th annual Fortissimo, a celebration of the Canadian Forces’ history and heritage in our nation’s capital, hosted by the soldiers of the Ceremonial Guard, took over Parliament Hill from August 9 to 11, 2012. The theme of this year’s show was the commemoration of the 200th anniversary of the War of 1812.

Fortissimo is a military concert and sunset ceremony conducted on the lawns of Parliament Hill. Fortissimo 2012 featured Canadian military brass bands and pipes & drums, soldiers of the Ceremonial Guard and international guests, Colonial Williamsburg Fife & Drums, the German Forces Elite Drill Team and Fifes & Drums, The Jamaican Military Band and the United States Army Old Guard Fife & Drum Corps. Fort Knox, KY – From 16-28 February, about 600 soldiers from 33 Canadian Brigade Group, comprised of 15 Army units across Ontario, spanning from Oshawa to Cornwall to Sault St. Marie Ontario, travelled to Fort Knox, Kentucky for EX WOLF PACK ENDEAVOUR. EX WOLF PACK ENDEAVOUR is a large-scale annual training event providing soldiers with a challenging and exciting opportunity to hone their skills. The exercise focused on working in and around urban environments, as is essential that soldiers remain current in their craft in order to meet Canada’s international and domestic defence objectives.

I had the opportunity to embedded with, Wpns Det, 2 Pl, A Coy, made up of mainly members of the Governor General’s Foot Guards, a reserve regiment from Ottawa.

15th annual Fortissimo celebration begins on Parliament Hill

Ottawa, ON – 15th annual Fortissimo celebration, a military tattoo and sunset ceremony, began on Parliament Hill tonight. This years edition of Fortissimo, featuring massed military bands, pipes and drums, guest performers and the soldiers of the Ceremonial Guard is commemorating the 140th anniversary of the Permanent Force.

Brigadier-General Fred Lewis, Commander Joint Task Force (Central) – Land Force Central Area, presided over the event debut as Reviewing Officer. Fortissimo 2011 features the Ceremonial Guard, including the Band and Pipes & Drums of the Ceremonial Guard, the German Army Silent Drill Team and Band, the Bermuda Regiment Band, the Bermuda Island Pipes & Drums, the Royal Canadian Artillery Band, the Dominion Carilloneur and the 30th Field Regiment – Royal Canadian Artillery, also known as the Bytown Gunners.

The Ceremonial Guard is a unique unit of the Canadian Forces composed of more than 400 Regular and Reserve soldiers from across Canada. Wearing the uniforms of The Canadian Grenadier Guards, based in Montreal, and The Governor General’s Foot Guards, based in Ottawa, the unit performs ceremonial public duties throughout the National Capital Region during the summer months. All members of the Ceremonial Guard are fully trained members of the Canadian Forces and proudly represent the more than 35,000 soldiers of the Canadian Army.

Canadian Forces Contingent Prepare For The Experience Of A Lifetime At The Nijmegen Marches

OTTAWA, ON – Canadian Forces (CF) teams within the province of Ontario conducted a send-off parade at the Canadian War Museum today, just two days prior to their departure to participate in the 94th annual International Four Days Marches Nijmegen, a prestigious long-distance marching event in the Netherlands, that Canadian military contingents have participated in since 1952. The send-off parade marked the end of months of training and is an opportunity to bid the contingent a bon voyage.

Between July 20 and July 23, CF marchers will cover 160 km through the Dutch countryside and crowded streets of towns in the Nijmegen area – often walking the same terrain where many Canadians fell during the Second World War.

“This is a poignant year for the Netherlands and Canada. It was only a few months ago that we commemorated the 65th Anniversary of the Liberation of the Netherlands – one of the most significant events leading to victory in Europe and the end of the Second World War,” said the Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence. “I am proud that Canada and the Netherlands continue to share a close connection and I believe that CF participation in the Nijmegen Marches is a great example of our friendship and co-operation.”

Led by Brigadier-General John C. Madower, this year’s contingent is comprised of 189 marchers. They are supported through their journey by a robust medical and logistics staff and accompanied this year by the Air Command Band, for a total strength of 233 participants.

“Nijmegen may be a test of physical fitness and stamina, but the event also helps build morale, friendship, and camaraderie amongst the Canadian Forces, and other nations participating,” said Brigadier-General Madower. “We look forward to developing these principles and values with our allied nations, most notably with the Netherlands this year.”

The Nijmegen Marches consist of four days of marching while wearing standard combat clothing and carrying a military backpack weighing at least 10 kg. The contingent is also supported by Logistik Unicorp, the official CF clothing supplier. Logistik is providing a golf shirt and fleece embroidered with the JTF Nijmegen crest for each member of the contingent.
