CAN-AM: Champions Can’t Rally Verse RailCats

Ottawa, ON – Wednesday afternoon’s contest was the Champions’ first annual School Day Game. Hundreds of students from around the National Capital Region attended the game. The kids provided for a cheerful atmosphere inside the ballpark and helped the Champions put on a rally at the end of the game but the offence of the Gary SouthShore RailCats was too much for the Ottawa Champions, as they cruised to a 6-4 interleague win at RCGT Park.

Gary SouthShore started off strong, scoring the first five runs of the ballgame. Their largest scoring play came on a screaming line drive from catcher Michael Vaughan. The double made it a 5-0 lead for the RailCats—one they wouldn’t relinquish.

The RailCats would add insurance in the top of the seventh inning. Adam Taylor’s liner fell into shallow right field, scoring Gary SouthShore’s sixth run. The play knocked lefthanded starter Andrew Werner out of the game.

Andrew Werner started the game for the Champions and settled down nicely after a rocky start. Werner threw over 100 pitches for his longest start of the season. It’s the second straight game that a Champions starter has gone for over 100 throws.

His final line had 10 hits charged against him, along with 4 earned runs.

At the plate, three Champions had RBIs. First baseman Jon Talley almost tallied three more, but a high fly ball in the bottom of the 9th inning was caught on the warning track by Gary SouthShore centre fielder J.D. Pulfer.

The win advances the RailCats’ record to a division-leading 9-4 on the season.
