CAN-AM: Borkowski ties League record, 15 strikeouts, but Champions fall 2-1 to Jackals

OTTAWA, ON – Steve Borkowski tied an all-time Can-Am League record by recording 15 strikeouts on Monday afternoon. However, he couldn’t get the victory, as the Ottawa Champions fell 2-1 to the New Jersey Jackals in the series opener at RCGT Park.

Borkowski’s accomplishment ties Mike Antonini who set the record as a Jackal in 2014.

The Jackals broke a 1-1 tie with a run in the top of the seventh, and the bullpen held on for a 2-1 victory over the Champions in a Civic Holiday matinee at RCGT Park. CF Johnny Bladel drew a leadoff walk for New Jersey, stole second, and scored on an RBI single from PH Jon Dziomba. New Jersey scored its first run in the second inning, when DH Brian Burgamy doubled and came around to score.

Jackals pitching was dominant. LHP Isaac Pavlik (pictured) struck out five over seven innings, allowing a run on five hits and earning the win. RHP Nate Gercken and RHP Johnny Hellweg each threw a scoreless inning in relief, with Hellweg earning a save.

SS Daniel Bick hit a solo homer in the loss for Ottawa.
