NASL: Sellout Crowd Witness to Heartbreaking Home Opener

Ottawa, ON – A sellout crowd of more than 3,400 fans welcomed professional soccer to Ottawa at Carleton University’s Keith Harris Stadium. Ottawa Fury FC (0-1) were looking for their first win of their inaugural season against the Minnesota United FC (1-0) who won their home opener last weekend.

The Minnesota United FC opened the scoring in the 37th minute after a good pass allowed Miguel Ibarra to break through Ottawa’s defenders, giving him an shot at Fury keeper Devala Gorrick which Ibarra deposited low to the left side.

The Fury went into halftime down 1-0 as Minnesota had possession for 63% of the first half.

In the 50th minute Vini Dantas scored the first goal in Ottawa Fury FC history as he headed home a great pass by midfielder Tony Donatelli. The crowd went wild when the ball went in, screaming and jumping to their feet as a confetti cannon exploded and Dantas was mobbed by his teammates.

It looked as if Ottawa would walk away with a 1-1 draw until Minnesota FC scored seven minutes into injury time, with just seconds left, sending Ottawa to a 2-1 defeat.
