Ottawa, ON – The second game of the quarterfinals saw Russia, first from group B and Switzerland, fourth from group A. It was a much closer game than the earlier game with shots 30-19 in favour of Russia which helped them score the opening courtesy #23 Tatyana Burina in the first but Switzerland’s #13 Sara Benz found the back of the net late in the second on the powerplay to tie the game. #17 Yekaterina Smolentseva scored the game winner for Russia 8:38 into the third and despite Switzerland pulling their goalie they couldn’t get any pressure to tie it back and fell to the Russian’s 2-1.
Russian Captain Yekaterina Smolentseva commented following scoring the game winning goal. “Every goal is important for our team. I understand that in Canada, women’s hockey has been developed already for a long time and in Russia, it’s not. We are working and we are approaching to try and develop women’s hockey.”
